Hair Loss

My head has been itchy for the last few hours. It was a little disconcerting to look down at the keyboard this morning and find lots of hairs.

This is consistent with the Melphalan chemotherapy I have had, occurring 7-14 days after treatment.

It may be that I lose all my hair or that it just thins out. In addition it may be that eyebrows, eye lashes and other body hair will thin or fall out.

This is almost certain to be temporary and hair will grow back in 10- 12 weeks (according to the forums). However, interestingly the hair may grow back with a different texture, curly or even a different colour. In the short term I may shave my head depending on how things progress. In some ways this may be the most drastic legacy of my treatment- it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming days.

  1. After chemo my hair grew back silver grey, frizzy and with the texture of steel wool. (I was 50 years old and still had very straight dark blonde hair before treatment). After a while the curls started straightening out and my hair turned a dark reddish brown. Now, 16 years later, it is a dark grey with a slight wave – still totally unmanageable. Have fun! Keep strong.
